It wouldn’t be fair not to mention the bugs. They are both a blessing and a curse. To read an interesting perspective on the pesky buggers, go here: www.visitsanblas.com/bugs.html
San Blas is in the jungle, built against a mangrove swamp, and it is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. The town is famous for its birdwatching, and no trip here would be complete without taking in the jungle boat ride. But all of this comes at a cost, and that cost is bugs! Two types mainly, mosquitoes and sand fleas (jejenes). We use repellent at buggy times (sunset and sunrise mostly) and in the evening we wear long pants and shirts, the bugs have kept the town off the beaten path, and for that we are grateful to them. However, if you are particularly sensitive to bites, or unable/unwilling to use repellent, you might not like San Blas. We love it, but it’s not for everyone. |
